We have an exciting event coming up next week! Nick Myers, founder of the ICP UK Hub will be presenting the foundations of the Internet Computer and how it compares to other decentralised infrastructure.
The Internet Computer adds autonomous serverless cloud functionality to the public Internet; making it possible to build almost any system or service entirely on a decentralised network using โcanister software,โ an evolution of smart contracts.

Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) stands as a pioneering concept in the realm of distributed computing, ensuring the robustness and trustworthiness of decentralised systems.
This talk introduces a replication algorithm that can tolerate Byzantine faults. BFT algorithms will be increasingly important in the future because malicious attacks and software errors are increasingly common and can cause faulty nodes to exhibit arbitrary behaviour.
Whereas previous algorithms assumed a synchronous system or were too slow to be used in practice, the algorithm described in this talk is practical: it works in asynchronous environments like the Internet and incorporates several important optimisations that improve the response time of previous algorithms by more than an order of magnitude.
By delving into the details of PBFT, this talk aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of its significance in ensuring fault tolerance and resilience in distributed computing environments.

The Decentralised Society (dSoc) is organising a new event for next Tuesday 25th where you will learn about other aspects of Web3 that are often disregarded, in particular, the Distributed Web. The talk is targeted towards any audience.
The current web relies on a centralised system, which comes with several issues such as censorship, single point of failure, lack of net neutrality, and no real digital sovereignty among many others.
The talk will be a journey through the different P2P protocols that have emerged in the past (and are still in use today) until reaching the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), an exciting project that has the potential to change the web forever.
And thatโs not all, there will be FREE PIZZA ๐ AND DRINKS ๐น PROVIDED!!
You can get your free ticket here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/distributed-web-a-journey-through-the-forgotten-reaches-of-web3-tickets-445099995067

Our session will feature Tom Humber who is a Special Projects lead at Parity Technologies. Special projects is a sub-department of Ecosystem Development, and primarily focus on schemes that fall outside the traditional mandate of Growth or Enterprise. This includes, CSR schemes, technical competitions and mergers and acquisitions.
The session will run for 45 minutes followed by Q&A. You will also have a networking opportunity afterwards.

This is the crypto talk that you don't want to miss... Covering all the tips and tricks you will need to survive the Crypto revolution.
Heard about Crypto but never known where to get started? Ever wondered WTF an NFT is? Want to dive into DeFi but not know your ERC-20 from your ERC-4626? This is the talk for you.
Coming from Southampton's very own Bored Ape & DeFi Degen, this talk aims to provide you with a crash course to help wrap your head around Blockchain, Crypto, NFTs, and web3 more generally. More importantly, Tom will be taking you through the lessons that have been learned from his seven-year journey into this space. To do this, the talk will be divided into a handful of sections focusing on specific topics.
- A Market Overview: where have we come from, where are we now, and what's next?
- Crypto Basics: what are the fundamentals that you need to understand?
- NFT/web3 Basics: how do NFTs fit into this picture and the broader web3 landscape?
- Getting Started: how can you get started in this space?
- The Important Lessons: want to avoid some of the common pitfalls/mistakes? Don't miss this!
To conclude the event, there will be a Q&A as well as the opportunity to network and chat following the event.
Of course, as always, refershments will be provided. This event will not be live-streamed so be sure to get your free ticket asap to avoid disappointment as we expect this to be a sell-out event. Rumour has it, there may also be a crypto giveaway as well...
The talk will start promptly at 18:15, Building 100/1001.
So sign up now and don't miss out on what is set to be a great event!

A comprehension of crypto, NFTs, and other Web3 aspects from a market perspective
The current web mostly relies on centralised servers, which are subject to vulnerabilities and concerns, such as DDoS attacks, censorship, data breaches, or networking errors. However, an emerging protocol named IPFS could avoid these issues by establishing a distributed file-sharing network with no single point of failure.
In this workshop, we are going to introduce IPFS, explain its main features, and compare it with the current centralised web. It is recommended to have a basic understanding of P2P protocols such as BitTorrent and we encourage you to bring your laptop.

We will cover topics like clients, wallets, transactions and of course smart contracts. We will focus on smart contracts development, and we will walk you through how to code your own smart contracts using the Solidity programming language.
Prerequisites:
- Basic programming skills (variables, functions, data structures, etc)
- Blockchain fundamentals
- MetaMask wallet

The University of Southampton Decentralised Society, also known as dSoc, is presenting Blockchain 101 โ a new series of workshops that will introduce the wonders of blockchain technology to everyone interested. The first workshop is led by George Giamouridis - PhD researcher at the Cyber Security Research Group of our university.
The team will give a brief talk about the history and technical aspects of Bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency that introduced the blockchain to the world. You will also be able to directly interact with the Bitcoin network and explore blocks, transactions and other metadata.
This workshop relies on working with a laptop and basic knowledge of the terminal is recommended. There will be helpers assisting with the setup and troubleshooting.
Refreshments will be provided!

Founded by a group of freshers in September 2021, the University of Southampton Decentralised Society (dSoc) aims to establish a hub for students and professionals interested in the philosophy of decentralisation. Empowering its members with knowledge, project and research opportunities, the society strives to become a platform for collaboration in the space.
In less than a year, dSoc had already reached more than 280 members and hosted six events, making us one of the fastest-growing clubs on campus. We have also established connections with reputable institutions, companies, and other organisations worldwide, with whom we look forward to cooperating.
We are working hard toward one of our most important goals: becoming a Decentralised Autonomous Organisation (DAO) by making our own blockchain. We believe this step is crucial to evolving into a truly decentralised society.
But that's not all. Apart from the governance use case, our network will open the door to a lot of possibilities: a reward system to motivate each others, an NFT marketplace, a microeconomy, or the tokenisation of virtually anything!
Whether you have just heard about blockchain or are an expert in smart contracts, we would love to have you in the society and attend our events! Join our discord server and stay tuned!
